        Ummm.... last Christmas was the first time in the 5 years that xbox went live where there were substantial outages for that week.

        I know it was a pain in the ass and it sucked, but the live network going down due to overload only happened that once, unlike every Christmas as you seem to imply.

I was just thinking about recently they have been releasing a lot of small updates to gear up for the NXE and live seems to go down for a couple hours. Nothing major. I was just hoping this update would NOT be another Christmas. That is a lot of content to roll out at once to everyone using LIVE. I just got the update fine though :)

        Only problem so far has been Netflix. Their activation servers are not working right now if you want to sign up for their online streaming service.

        Also playing music from a USB hard drive while in game is taking forever. It takes at least 5 minutes to load the songs once I choose the music folder I want to listen to. It works fine when in the dashboard though. Kind of weird.

  • thegamingguy, on 11/19/2008, -1/+17It is a for sure upgrade. I have enjoyed it so far, can't wait to get my friends in the party system too. Not having the blades get in the way anymore is the biggest upgrade. So many times I would be slow at the start of a multiplayer game because I would be sending a message in between and get stuck in that menu system. Plus I like that they can update more often rather than just spring/fall massive updates.

The extremely cheap cost of a Live subscription (what is it like $3.27/month or something) is NOT expensive. It allows them to continue to offer a great network and infrastructure and develop features like this. When it's free, you really do get what you pay for, e.g. PS3's live system.

The one thing that I am not too thrilled about is the advertisements. If I read the article correctly, there is going to be more ads? Or maybe the placement of them is going to be more strategically placed so you mistakenly select them and they hope you will get interested after the mistaken select of it? Regardless the advertisements in anything that I pay for is really irritating. I can see putting ads in the silver accounts that are the free live accounts which are pretty much useless anyways, but I feel that if I am paying for something then that should allow me to use the services without all the ads being shoved down my throat. Same goes when I go to the movies. It really pisses me off that right before the previews I have to sit and watch the damn coca-cola ads or the car ads and all that crap. I can't wait for them to put a DVR at the movies so I can skip that ***** there too.

    Alright, I kind of went on a rant there. All in all I am looking forward to the new update.

      You are playing a video game and you get video game ads. How is that different from getting movie ads at a movie theater?

      I'm not saying the deceptive part of the ad placement isn't wrong, because it is wrong. I would just suggest that you pay a little more attention to what an ad really is, lest you be fooled by one.

I still have a child account, so I don't have ads on the current dash, and hopefully I won't have ads on the new dash either. I just hope they fix it so I can download mature content: I set all my settings to allow all, but because it is a child account, I can't download mature stuff, I have to use a separate adult account. It wasn't like this until a couple months ago, Microsoft just made ***** choices.

Not to mention the smokers, hunters, tanks, and witches. Oh god the witches...

        Also there's a mode where you can play as the infected and try to stop the survivors (who are real people over xbox live)

        Why was Sony able to make the PS3 almost completely silent and have the power brick in the system but the 360 with a separate power supply sounds like my computer tower at start-up ALL THE TIME.

Search around the internet and it's not hard to find the instructions. Not sure I'd recommend doing it though. It might violate the terms and service of xbox live. I'll just pay for the overpriced 120 :(

Takes some getting used to but the only real important part to me is that it feels faster, pressing the guide button no longer takes ***** 5 minutes to load if you're in a game.

        You don't pay the network, who are the ones who run the ads.

        Most of the money made by a TV network is from ads.
        without them they would charge the cable companies through the roof
        which in turn means the cable company charges YOU through the roof.


        Would you want to pay $1500/month for ad-free cable?


        Xbox Live is different, because (I would guess) it could sustain itself purely with the subscriptions.

      • smergs, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1I agree with the people comparing this to cable tv, magazines, etc... To me it's the same thing. The ad's don't bother me at all. They are very easy to bypass. Unlike live tv where you have to wait for commercials. I think Microsoft has an excellent business strategy. I want them to profit. If they profit then that will(should) mean better things down the road for me as a gamer. Just like the NXE. I think it's a great example of us getting great updates.

        Movies.... Last I checked my DVDs only have those annoying bits at the beginning, which can be skipped no prob.
        Games....well...if it's done right, you shouldn't be able to tell it's an ad, from the game environment. (In most cases, nope, none of the games I have had ads in them....oh excuse me Mick and Mac for the Sega Genesis....that was a McDonald's advertisement with a crappy game inside. :P )
        Magazines....don't buy them, not many are interesting
        Internet...ads? I use adblock, so I haven't seen a stinking ad for a while.
        Radio....ok ya got me there, but since I don't listen to the radio that often.....

      I'm not saying I disagree, ads suck, but the fact is there are very few services that remove ads just because you've paid. The only thing I can think of is Websites like IGN who remove the ads if you are a subscriber, but even then it's only the ones that interrupt your page loads.

      Comparing the XBOX experience with the Windows desktop doesn't really make any sense, it's a completely different platform.

The requirements are a netflix account with unlimited monthly rentals, which you get with the three at a time plan, and Xbox Live Gold. You will have to go to the video market place, and then to netflix. It will as for an activation code. You will be instructed where to find the code on netflix's website. Enter it. It will only take a few seconds. I have watched several movies with no problem.
