- cawpin, on 11/18/2008, -19/+3Dude, this was front paged last week.
- MakiMaki, on 11/18/2008, -2/+20Really... Do you have the link? I'm absolutely sure this wasn't on the frontpage last week. I spent some time doing some thorough checks with the Digg search engine BEFORE even submitting this.
1. Did a search on rollingstone.com for promoted stories. Found nothing.
http://digg.com/search?s=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rollings ...
2 .Did a search for '100 greatest singers of all time' in title and description. Found nothing.
http://digg.com/search?s=100+greatest+singers+of+a ...
3. Even did a search and sort by 'newest stories' to confirm that I wasn't duping someone. Saw only expired stories. Nothing frontpaged.

It wasn't.
This article was not on the front page. Your linked article is a News Daily article which doesn't contain a single link to the original content offered by Rolling Stone Magizine, despite having dozens of links to its own site. Even the hyperlinked "Rolling Stone Magizine" doesn't link to the article, and not even the magazine.
There is nothing about MakiMaki's comment that is wrong, and your comment is 100% wrong.

- Sh0rtstak, on 11/18/2008, -0/+55I'm not one to complain about multiple pages, but 103 pages for this article? Thanks for posting the print view.
- smoreorless, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1http://www.greatestsongsofall.com
- ratchetbg, on 11/18/2008, -0/+8I just wonder who would have taken the time to go through 100 pages of the original article.
I mean, did they actually think someone would?- doingallright, on 11/19/2008, -3/+2I am going to.
- whataSAMF, on 11/28/2008, -11/+2really?
no trent reznor?
good list regardless.- gizmo12688, on 11/19/2008, -0/+12I love Trent as much as the next NIN fan, but he does not belong on the list. His actual singing is not the main attraction. The music and lyrics is what he is all about.
- whataSAMF, on 11/28/2008, -2/+4i still think he deserved to be on the list, even if he was 100. there are a few names on that list that i dont understand, but hey, im 16, maybe i havent been properly introduced to mary j. blidge yet.
- altempo, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1No Trent Reznor, I can sort of live with it....
BUT.... no Donovan????? no Nick Drake???????
Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Crackhippo, on 11/19/2008, -6/+1really!
no trent reznor!!! - dylio, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2The real question is, where is Maynard James Keenan?!
- mexicanman07, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1how about some ronnie van zant

- teotbote, on 11/19/2008, -0/+14I don't feel like scrolling through all of that, but I just wanted to pop in and voice my disapproval of Bon Scott not being on the list. Unless, of course, he was.
- reddevild, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3he wasn't and i'm voicing my fellow disapproval, great list, but would have been better with him on it
- teotbote, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2***** yeah, dude. let there be rock.
- Beowulf2112, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3I am also voicing my disapproval, Geddy Lee didn't make the list, and Axyl Rose did
- senatorpjt, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I knew Geddy Lee wouldn't be on the list (Rolling Stone hates Rush) but thanks for saving me the trouble of having to look for his name.
- mismetti, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Geddy Lee sounds like an old lady.
- tomg025, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1i was disappointed in not seeing geddy too but it is worth pointing out that he was a voter on this list. i guess it's a little respect from rolling stone (not that geddy needs it or anything...)
- hawksfan03, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1just an fyi, and I do realize your comment was meant to be sarcastic but if you are using FF you can hit / and then type in your search criteria similar to how Ctrl + F works, but with this the search box disappears
- teotbote, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1I wasn't being sarcastic, and I do know how to search a web page. So where does that leave you?
- hawksfan03, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1i thought you were just typing the obligatory, why the ***** is [insert name here] not on the list reference. my bad teotbote
- teotbote, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1Nope. I'm just really lazy and I really like Bon Scott.
- reddevild, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3he wasn't and i'm voicing my fellow disapproval, great list, but would have been better with him on it
- krabat, on 11/19/2008, -6/+45Rolling Stone lost all credibility a long time ago.
- ivansusanin, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4yeah, where the hell is Tom Jones on that list?
- andrewlotta, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I find it hilarious how they changed their trademark magazine size to a magazine a few inches bigger than the TV Guide magazine.
- hurricanewane, on 11/19/2008, -1/+2mariah carey? who writes this crap?
- rheaume, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4People with open minds and zero emo-quotient?
- ahoyhoy, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1Robert Plant could out-sing the ***** outta most of that top 5, except maybe Franklin.
- DJCult, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1For omitting Dave Wakeling, they should be shunned.
- abw1987, on 11/19/2008, -6/+1Those Rolling Stone Lists are Retarded.
Where the hell is Myles Kennedy?- abw1987, on 11/19/2008, -4/+2I realize I'm replying to myself but ARE YOU KIDDING ME BOB DYLAN TOP 10???
- peterjmag, on 11/19/2008, -4/+15Good to see Thom Yorke on that list. A lot of people don't seem to understand how innovative his vocals are/have been.
- blindelephant, on 11/19/2008, -0/+5Agreed. Listening to songs like Reckoner, Fake Plastic Trees, and How to Disappear Completely really give you a sense of the guy's range and versatility. Thom Yorke and Radiohead are always so underrated by mainstream music magazines like the Rolling Stones. It frustrates me to read lists like this.
- SquigglyP, on 11/19/2008, -1/+3he should have been higher, in my opinion. The list was missing a ton of really good vocalists, tho. No Reznor, Maynard, Ackerfeldt, Gibbons... Posrtishead is considered 'rock/pop', right? I fail to see how Beth Gibbons couldn't be on a list of even the top 20 vocalists in rock. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU6lXOjP5XU&feature ...
The list is made up of mostly 70's and 80's vocalists, with some 90's tossed in for good measure. Pretty much all of them are 'big in the USA', so... well... that's Rolling Stone for you. They only cover stuff that;'s big in the US, but then they make things big by covering them. It's like a big catch22 that guarantees they cover nothing but crap. They're more of a worthless political rag now than a music rag anyway.
- Rach1251, on 11/19/2008, -3/+11I was fully expecting to see Matt Bellamy on this list.
- Paradiddler45, on 11/19/2008, -1/+12Especially because he sounds exactly the same in concert. Not only can the guy sing like hell, but he plays a mean guitar and piano. Rolling Stone has always been a ***** magazine, though.
On another note, where the ***** is Maynard James Keenan? - Broomie, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1Same here. When I scrolled down and saw Thom Yorke I expected to see Matt Bellamy show up. I'm guessing this is 90's Thom Yorke anyway because lately his voice just sounds horrible in most songs, nothing compared to his voice in Pablo Honey, The Bends and OK Computer.
- Paradiddler45, on 11/19/2008, -1/+12Especially because he sounds exactly the same in concert. Not only can the guy sing like hell, but he plays a mean guitar and piano. Rolling Stone has always been a ***** magazine, though.

- dylio, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mONH52JZqo4
Listen around 5:00 and after specifically. Such a talented vocalist.
- dylio, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mONH52JZqo4
- larthallor, on 11/19/2008, -5/+22No Eddie Vedder? I could listen to that guy sing the telephone book.
- rpatel11, on 11/19/2008, -9/+3Chad Kroeger has the voice of an angel
- aherman, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Holy *****.
- illinoise89, on 11/19/2008, -0/+0Best laugh I've had all day.
- briansearles, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3#1 Mumble-singer in the hearts of us all.
- tmyprod, on 11/19/2008, -1/+3You wouldn't be able to understand a damn word of it, but it would be quite awesome.
- rpatel11, on 11/19/2008, -9/+3Chad Kroeger has the voice of an angel
- kimbomitt, on 11/19/2008, -4/+24How did they not put Rick Astley on there?
- 1807, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3they must not know the rules.
- Bagrad, on 11/19/2008, -1/+23Freddie Mercury 18th ? No.
- zoodoo12, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5No as in He should be higher, or no as in he should be lower, because Freddie is a great singer and I think he is perfect where he is at. He sang with real true passion
- pbjorge12, on 11/19/2008, -2/+5I'm interested in knowing this too...
If it were me I'd say he should've been higher. Top 10. Possibly Top 5. - bwseaver, on 11/19/2008, -3/+6Freddie deserves at least a top 5 spot.
Lennon, Dylan, McCartney and Jagger all ranked higher than Freddie Mercury?
I don't think so.- ahoyhoy, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1They were all song writers, not singers. They wrote great music, but weren't the best people to sing it (well, maybe McCartney).
- gizmo12688, on 11/19/2008, -1/+3Top 5 for sure.
- turini1, on 11/19/2008, -4/+1if they put Ray Charles above him than we know something is wrong..
- MrWally, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I'm glad to see Digg agrees with my on this.
Freddie Mercury is a god when it comes to singing. Hands down.
R.I.P. - manbearpig1, on 11/19/2008, -0/+0I clicked on the link expecting to see Freddie in the top 5 or top 10 at least... WTF?
- undy242, on 11/19/2008, -6/+12This list is absurd. I love Lennon and Dylan as much as the next hippie but if we are going by singing prowess solely then these guys should be much further down on the list. If they wanted to make a list for the 100 greatest "songwriters" then they should both easily be top 5.
Rolling Stone are a bunch of hack writers these days.- doublefelix, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1I thought it was an awesome list, and seeing all 100 artists on one page in print view nearly caused me to prematurely ejaculate.
- TheNWO, on 11/19/2008, -8/+26How is John Lennon at #5? He wasn't even the best singer in his band, and Paul McCartney wasn't listed ahead of Lennon here. How did Bob Dylan make the top 10 of a top SINGERS list and why is Wacko Jacko so low on this? This is a horrible list. Buried.
- Chewie67, on 11/19/2008, -4/+7Bingo.
There are a lot of people on this list that are way out of order. Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry are way too low. Purely based on their vocal talent alone they should be near the top.
No Sinatra? Really?
Springsteen? Dylan? Young? Nelson? Cobain? Really? Really?!? They may be good song writers, but they are HORRIBLE singers.
The list is a joke. - pilot3033, on 11/19/2008, -0/+12If you read the reasoning, you find that it's not just about the "American Idol" definition of singing. For example, Dylan isn't going to win Idol anytime soon, but his singing style and what he does with his voice both purposefully and just naturally have drastically influenced the way we value voice in music.
- freakstyle571, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2While I completely agree with your sentiments... The reasons behind some of these singers making the list are pretty bad. Especially when all of us can pretty much agree there are some singers that definitely have distinctive impressions on music as me know it that didn't make the cut...
- freakstyle571, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2While I completely agree with your sentiments... The reasons behind some of these singers making the list are pretty bad. - Chewie67, on 11/19/2008, -4/+7Bingo.
- fathermarlow, on 11/19/2008, -7/+15Maynard James Keenan....enough said
- charsdar, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3I'd like to see any of those 100 properly imitate Ticks & Leeches.
- tmyprod, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1I think he's even only been able to do it live a handful of times.
- dylio, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4Or H. Or Parabola.
- climbon321, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1He does a better version of No Quarter than Plant does.
- charsdar, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3I'd like to see any of those 100 properly imitate Ticks & Leeches.
- FENWAYFREAK, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1Good to see The Voice on there.
- somedudemanguy, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8By my count there's less than 10 singers on there currently recording. Is today's music really that bad?
- undy242, on 11/19/2008, -1/+4For the most part, yes.
- AnalogAssassin, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Yeah, it is. At least the stuff the labels 'let' us hear.
- teemingvoid, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Its okay Rolling Stone, I didn't expect anything broad minded from you.
- SquigglyP, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1the stuff on the radio is that bad, mostly because the stuff on the radio is done by 'musicians' that can't play their instruments and can't sing (and I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't playing music written for them like most of the pop stars do).
There's plenty of great bands that are currently recording and making music tho. Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Portishead, Radiohead, Blackfield, Bright Light Fever, Madder Mortem, Thrice, Three, Coheed & Cambria... I mean, some of the stuff does get air play, and some of the more popular bands out there are actually really good bands, but there's a HUGE amount of garbage to cover it all up, and there probably always has been. The difference I think between the previous bands that were popular AND talented and the new wave of bands that are either talented OR popular is the fact that the talent now wants to keep the rights to their music, wants to have control of their futures, and the studios want things to remain the way they always have. So instead of looking for really talented people they look for people who are moderately competent and willing to give up their creative ownership for money and a contract.
Seriously, tho... so some googles or youtube searches for any of those bands and check them out... most of them probably deserve to be on this list somewhere, but they're all around really good bands. - roebeet, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1No, it's not. Stop listening to Top 40 and do a little searching. You'll find them.
- Itamae, on 11/19/2008, -5/+7Rolling Stone is garbage.

- warsongs7, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Good for dialup.
- wejmahtin, on 11/19/2008, -3/+5I love Neil but god damn he has the worst singing voice in history.
- Chewie67, on 11/19/2008, -3/+5I love his music, but he should not be on this list.
Nor should Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain or Willie Nelson.
They're all good song writers, but horrible singers. - teotbote, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Neil Young is an amazing songwriter with few peers, but yes.. his singing is something like an owl on prozac.
The only thing is.. when you hear a Neil Young song being covered, it's hard to take it seriously, which is something Neil himself was always able to pull off, which makes him a ninja singer. You never see him coming, but he is amazing.- AnalogAssassin, on 11/19/2008, -0/+5What is 'good' singing? Is it having 'American Idol'-type chops, the ability to sing those Christina Aquilera-type melisma/yodels? Having an extended range? To sing powerfully? Are we celebrating technicians, or artists?
I grew up in the hair-band days, I remember a lot of people thought Geoff Tate of Queensryche was the greatest singer, he could sing so many octaves, blah blah. I still like the band, but I can't say that his impressive chops gives me the goosebumps like Otis Redding does on "I've been loving you too long."
To me, great singing is when an artist can put his heart and soul out there, it is honest, it isn't contrived or cheesy, just real and pure. Neil Young can do it, even though by technical standards, his voice is horrible. He does it with guitar also; the solo to "Cinnamon Girl" is arguable one of the best recorded, and it's just one note. - teotbote, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2AnalogAssassin: Probably most would say that a "good singer" can stay in key and have a pretty wide range. Neil Young is not that guy no matter how you roll the dice. Geoff Tate has the range and can stay in key, but he is missing the element soul in his work, which is why people don't know his name and still know Neil Young's. That's kind of the point I was getting at.
- clementineman, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2@ teotbote: Thom Yorke's live Neil Young covers weren't half bad, I think.
What bothers me about Rolling Stone is that it seems to put out generally the same lists for every category. Guess you only have so many "best's" to choose from when you're stuck in the past though. - teotbote, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Thom Yorke has the soul, man. He's also got one of the most innovative bands in the history of rock backing him up, so he's got a lot going for him.
- AnalogAssassin, on 11/19/2008, -0/+5What is 'good' singing? Is it having 'American Idol'-type chops, the ability to sing those Christina Aquilera-type melisma/yodels? Having an extended range? To sing powerfully? Are we celebrating technicians, or artists?
- schavira, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2I find Neil Young's voice haunting and beautiful
- Chewie67, on 11/19/2008, -3/+5I love his music, but he should not be on this list.
- aside, on 11/19/2008, -2/+5Happy with some choices (though Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley should be much higher), but no Jeremy Enigk?
I guess SDRE weren't influential enough? hmmmm- undy242, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I jam to some old-school SDRE too but I can't say he belongs in a list of the 100 greatest singers of all time.
- aside, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Heard his solo stuff? One of the most unique and emotive voices out there. As far as pure 'getting the song across through voice' it's hard to do much better...
- undy242, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I jam to some old-school SDRE too but I can't say he belongs in a list of the 100 greatest singers of all time.

in the top 10. of ALL TIME?
Really?
Really?
Better than Freddie Mercury?
REALLY?? - namelessXsilent, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8why start a list at number 1??
- bwseaver, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2I have always wondered that about RS lists.
- excavationist, on 11/19/2008, -2/+30No Frank Sinatra?
- Chewie67, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6Inexcusable.
- imwithpony, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2You beat me to it...buried for no Frank Sinatra...The list actually said that Jim Morrison was influenced by him. Shouldn't that be a dead give away that he deserves being on it?
I've never trusted Rolling Stone...most of their articles are bs in my opinion. - utdrew182, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1He was a better entertainer than a singer.
- jgreene777, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Rock Era top 100...
- wejmahtin, on 11/19/2008, -6/+1Many kudos to RS for having Tom Waits in the list, but dammit he should be #1 :)
- knightwalkerz, on 11/19/2008, -1/+12Vedder
Cornell
Keenan
Bellamy- herrshuster, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5Agreed on Cornell and Bellamy
- ExSlashdotter, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2yeah, i noticed cornell was a voter in making this list, but wasn't included himself. Come on, even mary j blige is #100...
- Chirp08, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1I disagree on Cornell, he can sing but all his live stuff and unplugged stuff is very disappointing.
Keenan on the other hand is top 50 in my books, it's amazing it's the same singer on some tracks he has such range and emotion.
- OpusCroakus, on 11/19/2008, -2/+6ahhggghh!!!!!!!! my ***** heads goona explode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE Rolling.Stone.!!!
- czarr, on 11/19/2008, -5/+1Why are the top 10 "by" someone. What does that mean?

- Ruch182, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2bono...higher than all those other great singers? u2 are a good band but he's not that good singer.
- blugill, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4No Alison Krause? Likely the sweetest voice in American music today!
Stupid list.... - azureskies88, on 11/19/2008, -2/+8Any list of vocalists, ordered or not, as measured by ANYTHING (influence, impact, skill, etc.), that doesn't prominently feature Freddie Mercury as the premiere male vocalist is not worth my nor any other person's time. Further buried for "Rolling Stone."
- adventflux, on 11/19/2008, -3/+20No Sinatra. ***** this list.
- SquigglyP, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Sinatra wasn't rock. This is 'best rock vocalists'
- mal1964, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1Great Artist!, The list and how it was formatted is Horrible!
This summer, Rolling Stone asked artists - including Bruce Springsteen, Keith Richards and many others - along with journalists and industry insiders to name their favorite singers of the rock era - Vorphlack, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8No King Diamond?!
- IUAndar, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Or Neil?!
- Lucifugerising, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Grandma!!!!!!!
- karmazon, on 11/19/2008, -1/+4LEMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Cathartik, on 11/19/2008, -2/+4Jeff Buckley should of been way higher.
- Microfoot, on 11/19/2008, -3/+1I expected a terrible list, but Bob Dylan? Really? I like his music, but he has to be one of the worst singers.
- Lucifugerising, on 11/19/2008, -7/+2Wait Ray Charles beats out the King.
Seriously.
Ray Charles had very little range.
and I don't even wanna speak about Bob "Tone Deaf" Dylan - DeadlyNinja, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5No Tay Zonday? Buried as inaccurate.
- spaceman84, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1Dead meme is dead.
- DeadlyNinja, on 11/19/2008, -1/+5That's not funny. 2 of my friends were killed by dead memes.
- Pinkshisno, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Did they blend?
- spaceman84, on 11/19/2008, -2/+1Dead meme is dead.
- Chrysalii, on 11/19/2008, -1/+3Wow a ***** list from Rolling Stone...what else is new?
still I can't bury it, seeing as all 100 are on one page....so *neither dugg or buried* - frell69, on 11/19/2008, -2/+4First person I thought of that should've been on the list was Maynard James Keenan. Why oh why was he not on there? Then thinking some more, where the F*** is Mike Patton?! That man can do some incredible things with his voice. Dylan, great songwriter, horrible voice. Distinctive though. Mercury should've been higher and agree about most the other omissions people are mentioning.
- heronimous, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2yeh i went through the whole thing to find patton.. it's pretty criminal that cobain and iggy pop can be on there representing punk/pop/heavier muzik without patton or keenan..
- bsummersett, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1I think everyone should realize these were picked by famous musicians themselves, along with some music industry people, so it's not just some arbitrary list.
- kenhatesemos, on 11/19/2008, -0/+0it's as arbitrary as any other list.
- docsimmons, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Rob Halford!?!?!
- Ruqsaq, on 11/19/2008, -3/+5whoa whoa... Kurt Cobain @ #45!!! Are you kidding me? I can appriciate what Cobain did for music, but Nirvana wasn't Nirvana because Cobain was a great singer!
Cobain @ 45 and Joe Cocker @ 97? WTF?
No Aaron Neville? I don't get it. - ahoy, on 11/19/2008, -3/+4Lou Reed > Cobain
better songs, better voice
and i know they're taking originality or unconventionality or whatever into consideration, so my point is still that heroin addict reed was better than addict cobain. -
